Nordic Council
An organization for cooperation between the parliaments and governments in the Nordic countries.
It was founded on Danish initiativ in 1952 and started in 1953. There were four founding members: Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. In 1956 Finland joined the council and in 1970 the Pharoe Islands and Åland.
At independence in 1991 the three Baltic countries, Estonia, Latvia and Lithaunia became observatory members.
The Nordic Council takes initative to cooperation between the Nordic countries, gives advice and in some cases, controls the membering countries. The council consists of members from the Nordic parliaments and it meets one or two times every year. Since 1971 the Council of Ministers accounts for the cooperation between the Nordic Council and the Nordic governments.
The citizens in the participating countries enjoy total freedom to travel without passports, and also have the right to settle and work in any member country. When moving to another member country the citizens immediately get the same rights as the citizens of the new country.
